im-talkathon-3

A couple o minutes before i saw a banner for something called  "im talkathon". I checked it to learn more about it.

You may have received hundreds of mails calling you to forward them in order for a little girl somewhere in the country to take some pennies from your ISP. Well… you know this is fake. But actuay there is something that is not fake at all and it is very very interesting.

Microsoft’s im initiative started on March 2007. Every time you make use of Live Messenger or Hotmail a little amount of money goes into charity on one of the ten cooperated organizations like Unicef.

im-talkathon-4 Today, after one year and a couple of months, the total amount that has been collected is a bit more than $1,500,000, a small one if you consider the numbers ant the company we are talking about. That may be why Microsoft decided to boost this thing ant introduced us "im talkathon". Actually it invented a fictional character, the blogger Parker Whittle who invite all of us to participate in one month of unstoppable im’s and emails, pushing microsoft to pay more on those organizations.

In order to activate this service to start counting your ims and emails there are some steps you have to do. For Hotmail you have to visit this page and select the organization you want your money (actually Microsoft’s money :) ) to be sent. For Live messenger you have only to write a coude in your personal message. Depending on the organization copy the code from the table below. After that you will see the im-initiative-logo icon on your personal message place. Well, lets give it a try :)

help-myanmar-victims

Everybody is shocked by the new coming from Myanmar. I am reading about 22,000 dead and 41,000 missing. This is a huge disaster that everyone should answer to.

Google raises a hand in the global effort to calm the effects of this catastrophe. There is already a “Support disaster relief in Myanmar” page with google checkout options to support Unicef or Direct Relief International.

Everyone should Join the efforts mobilizing around the world to assist cyclone victims in Myanmar. We must help them rebuild their communities, and their lives.

Google has also created a KLM file to track the path of Cyclone Nagris, see here

The Smurfs Have Failed:(

smurfs-almost-record

395 Croatians gathered on Sunday, dressed up like little blue Smurfs to try to break the world record of “many Smurfs gathered together”. A life dream becoming a reality, an entire country would have the honor to be included in the famous Guinness book of records, through this so smart and wise idea.

The previous world record was just 290 people. So the 395 Croatians, painted them self’s blue, wore white trousers and hoods and gathered around to enjoy their place in history.

But is seems the Internet proved to be the wrong source of information. The record was not 290 people any more, it was 451 and it was held by students from Warwick University.

The Croatian Smurfs are now upset as they could have easily gather 60 more people and earn a spot in the record book.

Since I could not find a video of this event, I included UNICEF’s tragic video that can only bring sorrow to everybody.

Cool Green Adverts

January 14, 2008 · Filed Under Living, News · Comment

It is said that advertisers these days have lost their inspiration and their desire for quality. Sometimes its is true, we walk in the street and we see all kinds of bad taste examples that makes you wonder “What were they thinking?”

BUT there are some exceptions of very talented advertisers that really have inspiration. Combined with a good subject then they create ads that really not only turn heads but also create awareness of the things the destroy us and our planet.

Have a look at some of the best ads that are out there:

1. Advert posted on the wall of a swimming pool to alert us of the effect of global warming

2. Greenpeace shows us what should be on top of our minds for 2007: “Don’t let this be our future. Save our rain forest, stop global warming”.

3. Another take on global warming: “Winter: you will miss it when it’s gone”

4. WWF goes on an anti pollution campaign to remind us of the state of our rivers and that we caused it.

5. Greenpeace strikes again this time in China to remind people that each piece of paper comes from trees.

6. This time a UNICEF puts us in a perspective of what the lack of fresh/clean water equals to.
