He Can See With His Sons Tooth!

This must be one of the strangest stories. The 57 year old Robert McNichol became blind 3 years ago due to a work related accident when liquid aluminum fell on his face.
The solution to his problem came a few years later and the only thing he needed was a doner….of tooth!. The Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton, Doctors managed to implant a “living” tooth, belonging to his son, straight into his eye ball. This technique is called Osteo Odonto Kerato Prosthesis (OOKP) and was first appeared in Italy in the 70’s.
He now got his eye sight back and cares less about people telling him that he looks like the Terminator.

Coca Cola and Mentos Mint Eruption
An urban legend is going around Internet about a kid that died after consuming Coca Cola and Mentos Mints. It was said that the kids stomach burst from a chemical reaction that was caused from the combination of those two products. This rumor probably begun back in 1979, but came back to life through the marvel of Internet and Youtube.
People (scientists ?) have speculated that the Gum Arabic that is found in Mentos helps to break the surface tension that keeps the carbon dioxide bubbles from escaping rapidly. Other items such as pennies (that do not contain Gum Arabic) are also known to cause violent soda foaming.

It seems that the primary cause for this effect is the ruff surface of a Mentos (at a microscopic level) provides a high surface area within a very small volume. That’s where bubbles will form! The Mentos weight takes them all the way to the bottom of the Coca Cola bottle hence more of the liquid has time to react and create bubbles. In fact the pressure builds up so fast that you end up with an explosion in the form of a geyser !
If you want to try this check out this How-To pdf guide on how to create our Diet Coke and Mentos nozzles!

Personally I would not try to experiment by consuming Cola with Mentos! Nevertheless experimenting with Mentos and Coca Cola is an excellent opportunity for loads of fun (and mess) as you can see from the video below.

Terrorists Bee-have!

Vapor detection instrumentation is used to detect anything that leaves an odor such as explosives, drugs, cancer etc. Where do bees fit in all this you might ask…well the answer is simple. A company in the UK called Inscentinel trains bees, much like the same way we train dogs, to stick their tongs out (and expect food as a reward) when they smell a “dodgy” chemical compound.
The bees are strapped on to a holder, that is harmless to them, and a camera/image recognition system alerts the operator when they stick their tong out. Each set of bees is trained to a specific scent and the accuracy of the system is improved by using more bees. In fact a system with large number of bees can be used to detect a range of compounds simultaneously. So using a “100-bee detector” the authorities can train 10 bees to detect Semtex, ten for liquid explosives etc, hence getting a clearer picture as to what potential terrorists might be using.

A more commercial version of this sensor system will be available from spring 2008 and may be experimentaly be used in major airports around the world.
In other words…Bee-careful someone is watching you!
