70,000 years ago humans came close to extinction as a result of climate change (drought) as scientists speculate. This was revealed from a genetic survey which showed that we were down to just 2,000 people.
Paleontology Professor Meave Leakey from Stony Brook University said:

The project name is Asirra (Animal Species Image Recognition for Restricting Access), and it is a HIP (Human Interactive Proof), a way to prove that you are a human and not a bot, something like CAPTCHA)
