Flywheel Based Hybrid Engine Systems Replace Batteries

July 3, 2008 · Filed Under News, Technology · Comment

flybridsystems

Adding a flywheel system to replace the battery in a hybrid car, creates the Flybrid. This new idea will harvest 70% of the braking energy and convert up wheel motion. It does sound like riding a toy car but Jaguar and Formula 1 are considering the concept.

For more information visit the Flybrid Systems website.

Nereus: Kite Driven Watercraft

June 6, 2008 · Filed Under News, Technology · Comment

nereus3

Mathias Koehler, a German designer, is behind the Nereus. This is a kite powered watercraft that is able to submerge for short periods of time. With a behaviour similar to a jet ski it promises hours of fun in the sea and all in an ecological way as it is essentially powered by the wind.

This scooter is equipped with fins, which are steered with the feet and joysticks (handlebars) that control the kite. There is no information regarding its price as it is still a prototype.

9/11: Nothing Goes To Waste

New York, the latest addition to the US Navy Fleet was “baptized” in New Orleans. This ordinary event is actually special as the boat was made from 7.5 tons of iron that came from the World Trade Center.

From ecological point of view this thing is very good, but I have to say it is a bit spooky. Americans state with this symbolism the necessity of this ship and the need to increase the military spending. The ship’s motto is ?Strength forged through sacrifice. Never Forget?.

Doomsday Seed Vault Has Opened Its Gates

doomsday-vault-2

Few hours ago the Doomsday Seed Vault, in Svalbard, Norway, opened its doors. I remember reading about it about half a year ago in Wired and I got impressed. This is basically a special vault that is built to hold, with top most security, seeds from every plant that exists on Earth. From its name “Doomsday” I imagine its purpose is to overcome any future plague or ecological devastation.

The opening ceremony was broadcast live. The photographs from the vault are impressive to say the least and they remind scenes from science fiction movies.

See below a video from the construction of the vault and if you want to see today’s ceremony and see the vault complete then go here

IBM created the PowerUp, an online multiplayer game which is hoped to “persuade” ids to help save the planet from an ecological disaster. The games purpose is to create 3 power sources, solar, wind, ad water before the planet is totally destroyed from storms, floods etc

In other words this is an educational online game probably aimed for use at schools :)

After 14 years of research Guy Negre managed to design an engine that will bring the biggest revolution in the car industry. This engine works with ?Compressed Air Technology¨and at the moment it is the most economic and ecological solution for our transportation.

Indian car manufacturer Tata has already started their production and these cars are expected to arrive to the European market until the end of 2008 with a price tag of 7,000$. The running costs of this vehicle will be small as it can do 200 km with 1,5 euros. The top speed is 112 km/h which should be fine for a city car.
