When our planet’s magnetic field meets solar particles, some radio waves are been created called Auroral Killometric Radiation (AKR).

This is known many decades now but it was only recently when scientists managed to “listen” to this sounds. They are a bit scary, we are lucky that we don’t listen to those things :)

Our Alien friends could be able to listen to those sounds if they have the appropriate technology skills. I hope that earth’s sound will not disturbe them and force them to shut us down :)

Hey, video is here, listen to the earth :)

Papernauts: Send Your Name To The Moon

nasa-certificate

NASA’s new service is here to take anyone to the moon! Anyone can qualify as age, physical abilities or other issues are now in the past. But there is a small problem, only your name can go to the next lunar mission!

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is set to go and collect data for future possible landing and outpost sites for the Constellation program. It is going to carry a chip, with peoples names, and float around the universe for ever as the LRO will never return to Earth. The good thing is that you will be entitled to a nice NASA certificate that shows that your name is somewhere out there!

Google Ocean - Cousteau Would Be Proud

Google never stops. After having map almost the entire world in High Def images it is time to do something about the Oceans. CNET News.com reported that in December there was a meeting at Googleplex with top oceanic researchers, to discus the potentials of mapping digital the earth’s oceans.

The outcome would be an application similar to Google Earth (or maybe inside Google earth, like Google SKy). The user will be able to navigate through the entire environment, search, zoom, etc. Exactly like Google Earth.

Experts argue that more than 100 years will be needed in order to complete a 3d high resolution scanning of the oceans, but others insist that there are already enough maps for the new Gooogle experiment.

We are waiting :) I think that the outcome will be less impressive than Nintendo’s Endless Ocean

From the title you might have guessed what this post is about :). Celestis is a pioneer in the funeral home services and now proposes space travels.

Starting from their cheapest service that costs $695 a special urn with 1gr of the dead person’s ashes inside, can start a short space voyage and then end up on earth. The Lux option starts from $12,500 and is a journey to the vast space with no return. But the most interesting service is burial on the moon!

Last few months Google Earth had the potential to change it to ?sky mode? and look and navigate in space. Today Google presents us Google Sky which is a stand alone version of Google Earth and through your browser someone can see the stars and the planets.

What was impressive is the historical view that it offers as an option (not sure if they ever had it on Google Earth) with which you can see the constellations as the ancient people used to see them.

Its not a coincidence that this announcement comes after the Worldwide Telescope from Microsoft :)

Doomsday Seed Vault Has Opened Its Gates

doomsday-vault-2

Few hours ago the Doomsday Seed Vault, in Svalbard, Norway, opened its doors. I remember reading about it about half a year ago in Wired and I got impressed. This is basically a special vault that is built to hold, with top most security, seeds from every plant that exists on Earth. From its name “Doomsday” I imagine its purpose is to overcome any future plague or ecological devastation.

The opening ceremony was broadcast live. The photographs from the vault are impressive to say the least and they remind scenes from science fiction movies.

See below a video from the construction of the vault and if you want to see today’s ceremony and see the vault complete then go here
