Today is the day that not only Firefox 3 is officially released but its also the day that everybody is trying to break Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded on a single day. So go on, download the new browser from here, and take part in something big.

The latest update said:

Mozilla.com web traffic is pushing well over 2 Gigabits a second of just pure HTTP traffic. That is in addition to the 13 Gigabits a second or so of download traffic. We are still at around 14,000 download/minute and mozilla.com is responding well! Go Mozilla community and IT team!

Update: Firefox claims that 8 million copies downloaded in the first 24 hours and so far 14 million people have downloaded the new version. The official response from the Guinness people is not out but you can monitor the stats here.

Update 2: Guinness officials accepted Mozilla?s final count of 8,002,530 downloads (first 24 hours)

Regular updates of the downloading progress you can reed here.

500,000,000 Firefox Downloads Earns Rice!

The Mozilla community (ie Firefox), celebrated yesterday the 500,000,000 downloads of Firefox with a very original way. Their aim was to play at Freerice.com (a page where you play for free and give away grains of rice to people that need food) and gather 500,000,000 grains of rice.

From what I see Freerice’s daily rice grain levels fluctuate between 100,000,000-150,000,000. I am curious to find whether the Firefox community managed to reach their goal :) (will update this article as soon as I find out)
