300 Days “Shipwrecked” On A Deserted Island

Few years ago Tom Hanks starred in “Cast Away”, a film about a man that was shipwrecked in a deserted island, somewhere in the Pacific ocean. He stayed on that island for some years and lived exclusively on the food that he found on the island. Now Xavier Rosset, a French explorer and adventurer is planning of repeating a similar feat and stay for 300 days on a deserted island in the South Pacific near Tonga. He will take with him a Swiss army knife, a video camera and a solar panel to charge the camera. He will use the camera to record footage of his adventure and compose a 52 minute documentary of his experience.
Like Tom Hanks’ character, he will too live off the island’s natural resources.
See a video of Xavier below.

One Million Word BillBoard By Sanyo And Saatchi

Working in an advertising house is certainly a big challenge that requires from the advert teams to often come up with innovative ideas to make an advert stand out. When a company asks an advertiser to promote a camera the result is usually a picture of the camera with a lot of technical stuff next to it. I doubt if anyone notices these adverts any more. When Sanyo wanted to make an advert for their Xacti CA65 Underwater Camera, they went to the people at Saatchi & Saatchi. They in turn came up with something totally unique, the world’s longest advert. They created a 63 meter long advert which contains one million words related to underwater life and activities. Among these one million words we can find a comprehensive guide of marine species, major tsunamis, shipwrecks, and two whole books: Moby Dick and 20 000 Leagues Under The Sea. Above the “waterline they only placed two words, seagull and lighthouse. This was done to show that there is more topics to capture underwater than above.

The Focus: One Hand DSLR By Manuel Prada

Manuel Perez Prada, has designed a rather futuristic DSLR concept, called “the Focus”, which is basically a lens that has a camera! This is suppose to remove the camera bit behind a lens. At the same time it uses the dead space inside the telescopic lens providing a functional artful design. No word yet regarding availability and cost but its sure will not come cheap!

This is a very beautiful video taken at the South Pole from a steady cam.
MapJack Beats Google Maps!

I remember how excited I was when I first saw Streetview (Google Maps). Some times I browsed through the streets of America to find something strange to participate in all those unofficial contests with funny pictures taken by the Google camera.
I never paid much attention to the quality of the pictures. I thought with a project of this magnitude that high quality was not possible.
Till I saw MapJack. A small group with cheap equipment from Radio Shack and some knowledge in hardware and software managed to create something better than Google!

Till now the cities that are included are the San Francisco (America) and Chiang Mai (Thailand) and as they say they are waiting sponsors to cover more cities.
