The Domain King
He is one of the most successful Internet entrepreneurs who managed to make a lot of money without getting tired. He did not create Google or make Facebook nor Ebay. He just decided to invest a few bucks on domain names 13 years ago.
His name is Rick Schwartz and he is known as the Domain King. He bought on the 27th of December 1995 his first domain. Then he realized that this would be a profitable business. A few months later he decided to buy 100 domains. By the end of 1996 ha had bought hundreds of domains. So he decided to build some of them. The domains that pointed to x-rated content he used to advertise foreign sites. Within a few months he is making 500$ per day just from that.
After some time he put his hand deep in his pocket and bought porno.com for $42,000
Next purchase for Rick was ass.com which he took for 12,500$.
Both domains brought him enough revenue to continue this business. So he bought Men.com which he took for $15,000 and later sold for $1,300,000.
About 1/3 of the domains that Rick has bought was already registered so he gave something extra to get it. In fact he has spend about $1,500,000 for such purchases, when a domain can cost about $10-20. Of course the amount sounds small compared to the 1 billion that these domains cost today.
He now has over 4,300 domains which bring him more than 50,000,000 visitors per year.
Some of them are candy.com, widget.com and property.com
Rick’s last big sale was from CNN. He sold the domain iReport.com for the sum of $750,000.
Well at least I made my effort to repeat Rick’s achievement by getting a lot of domains. It was about 2,000 domains, and in the end I only managed to give away one for free!
