Melting Glass For The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope

The 8.4m Large Synoptic Survey Telescope will add a qualitatively new capability in astronomy providing time-lapse digital imaging of faint astronomical objects across the entire sky. This telescope it is expected to see first light in 2014 from Cerro Pachon in Chile.
A Mirror Lab is located at the University of Arizona where hot glass is melted inside a rotating oven. This glass will then form the primary and tertiary mirrors of the Telescope.
