With an oven chamber that is about 7 μm x 4 mm (1/2 the width of a single hair and a slightly shorter than an ant) it certainly must be the world’s smallest microwave oven. Am not sure if us every day kind of people will ever find a use for it but the scientists aim to use it as a lab-on-a-chip for DNA forensics and complex biochemical analyses. This is the brain child of the people at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology and George Mason University who wanted to be able to heat very small samples of materials (pinhead-size drop of liquids).
