AOL announced that on the 1st of February it will stop all further development of Netscape (people would still be able to download it). I remember the time (long ago) when I used to faun upon all those that started using, the new at that time, Internet Explorer. Its popularity though was expected, due to Microsoft backing it. Even though there were some accusations regarding they way it handled competition, Microsoft managed to squeeze Internet Explorer into every home in the world, since it was pre-installed in all its operating systems.

Netscape leaves behind a legacy, called Firefox, which for the time being it seems as the only alternative (at 10%) that can reduce the trade monopoly of Internet Explorer.

For the record, AOL bought Netscape 8 years ago for $10bn
